​​Upstream lab Technician /Field Chemist

A Field Chemist in the Global Upstream Analytical team will be responsible for performing general and specialized well site chemistry methodologies in support of the Oil & Gas industry. The assignments are potentially global in location and will require international travel and extended periods of up to approximately 30 days on location. The testing may be performed at the sampling location, in client supplied work areas, or potentially in supplied portable laboratories.
Job Duties

The following duties apply to this position. If required, the Field Chemist will also be expected to perform similar duties on an assignment basis at any of the fixed laboratories:

• Perform testing typical of laboratory personnel and assist in setting up, adjusting and operating laboratory equipment for which the technician has been adequately trained and has been verified to operate correctly in accordance with applicable standards and sound laboratory practice.
• Assist in or perform basic analytical tests from well-defined standards and procedures as assigned by the Field Operations Manager.
• Assist in calibrating laboratory instruments for which the technician has been adequately trained and has been verified to operate correctly in accordance with applicable standards and sound laboratory practice.
• Read and understand all analysis and safety standards in English, including ASTM, UOP, IP and other industry or internal analytical standards and procedures used in the laboratory.
• Exercise procedural, safety and quality requirements specified, local affiliate, and/or Global Upstream Analytical Services department (such as: FluidPro PAL™ policies, manuals, memos, and directives).
• Attend training and pass appropriate examinations in petroleum, chemical and gas analysis, including Right-to-Know training, hazardous materials disposal, and other safety and compliance training required by applicable regulations.
• Understand and be able to complete required laboratory and field raw data sheets and make accurate entries into laboratory computer programs. Follow SOP’s on this topic of data documentation.

• Ability to travel and work on site for extend periods of time.
• Must be able to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea, when such odors are within government-designated permissible exposure limits.
• May be required to provide limited supervision and training of lesser trained technicians and chemists.

Job Requirements:

• A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in chemistry or engineering from an accredited university is preferred.
• Four (4) years of demonstrated work experience related to oil and gas E&P in the field or in a laboratory is required.
• Willing and able to work up to 6 months per year at domestic and foreign work sites rotating in and out of assignments as needed. Typical assignment duration is approximately one month.
• Able to pass criteria set forth in the FluidPro PAL™ training program SOP regarding the start up and shut down of a mobile laboratory.
• An understanding of gas chromatography, and various bench chemistry instrumentation performing typical ASTM and manufacturer procedures. Field sampling of oil and natural gas products is also required.
• An aptitude for trouble-shooting mechanical and electrical instrumentation is required.
• Requires a working knowledge of gas chromatography methods and oil / gas analyses.
• Must have experience collecting, transferring and transporting surface oil and gas samples.
• Must have good working habits which include attention to detail, cleanliness and a cooperative attitude toward co-workers and superiors.

• Good written and oral communication skills in English are required and previous experience in a laboratory environment is desired.

• A mechanical aptitude with an interest in chemistry and science is a must along with a willingness to learn, to follow instructions and to precisely record results from laboratory and field tests. Must be able to work with limited supervision and be self motivated.

Other:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and test or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Laboratory personnel must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Cannot be color blind.
• Field Chemist position employees work in many global locations. Their primary duties are as listed above and they report directly to the Field Operations Manager. When not performing specific field assignments employee will have additional local duties and a potential local (“dotted line”) manager. These local duties may vary in scope from working in local fixed laboratories, training positions, or business development roles but are subordinate to this job description.
